Sima The Comedian Launches Joburg’s Only Dedicated Comedy Club

South African stand-up has a new, permanent home. Opening its doors this weekend from May 1st to May 3rd, Sima’s Funny Galore Comedy Club officially launches in Emmerentia, marking a vital addition to the city’s entertainment scene as the only dedicated comedy club currently operating in Johannesburg.

South Africa has a rich, globally recognized comedy pedigree. From the underground circuits of the late 90s to the massive theater tours that birthed international icons, local comedy has always been the nation’s most razor-sharp tool for social commentary and unifying relief. However, the culture has historically relied heavily on pop-up nights at restaurants, bars, and massive arena tours, often leaving a gap for the quintessential, intimate “comedy club” experience where raw talent is honed. Sima’s Funny Galore bridges that gap, offering an authentic, dedicated room built strictly for the art of stand-up.

Founded by veteran entertainer Sima The Comedian, the venue promises to be a hub for both established titans and rising stars. With over eight years in the industry, Sima has established himself as a premier comedian, producer, master MC, and a two-time comedy competition finalist. Known as one of the country’s most formidable improv comedians, he has shared the stage with South African comedy royalty, including Loyiso Gola, Mpho Popps, and Jason Goliath.

“This isn’t just about opening a venue; it’s about creating a sanctuary for the craft,” says Sima. “We wanted a space where audiences can experience the magic of stand-up up-close, and where comics, both local and international, have a permanent stage in Joburg to experiment, perform, and connect.”

Sima’s Funny Galore Comedy Club will operate every Friday through Sunday. For its grand opening weekend, the club will feature a curated lineup of local and international acts.
