Meeting the parents is stressful enough. Doing it over Diwali, with family secrets, culture clashes and two very opinionated households? That’s a recipe for fireworks.Netflix has released the official trailer for How To Ruin Diwali: Meet the Parents, the newest instalment in the Netflix fan-favourite How To Ruin franchise (How To Ruin Christmas, How To Ruin Love), premiering on 30 October 2026.
The three-episode comedy brings together Burnt Onion Productions and filmmaker Jayan Moodley, whose Kandasamys: The Baby, and Meet the Khumalos are now playing on Netflix.
At the centre of the story are perfectionist Mmabatho (Rosemary Zimu-Mnguni) and her down-to-earth fiancé, Varshen (Kyle Clark), who are ready to take the next step in their relationship.
There’s just one problem: their families have never met. When Varshen introduces Mmabatho to his parents, Tarina (Jailoshini Naidoo) and Sharm (Koobeshan Naidoo), over Diwali weekend, an already awkward introduction quickly spirals into family chaos. The surprise arrival of Mmabatho’s estranged parents, Penelope (Sonia Mbele) and Mandla (Meshack Mavuso), turns one uncomfortable dinner into a full-blown clash of personalities, expectations and cultures. One badly timed revelation threatens to derail the family’s Diwali celebrations altogether. Determined to fix the mess, Mmabatho takes matters into her own hands… only for every well-meaning attempt to make things right to go spectacularly wrong.
The cast features a constellation of South African stars, including Denise Zimba (who reprises her role as Zama from How To Ruin Christmas), Luthando BU Mthembu, Ashish Gangapersad, Kaseran Pillay, and newcomers Quinton Madlala, Mishka Lockhart, Hermoine Reddy and Priya Bandu.
