Comedy Channel Reveals It Was Behind Satirical Cyril Clip That Took Some Liberties With The Load-shedding Narrative By Using AI

South Africans have once again proven they can see the humour in any dark situation – even rolling blackouts! And not believing everything you see on the internet.

Comedy Central Africa (DStv channel 122) revealed that they were the ones to have a little AI fun with everyone’s favourite cupcake. The “My fellow South Africans” AI video spoof was anonymously shared out on social media in the run up to April Fool’s Day for a bit of tongue-in-cheek fun.

“We’ve had a pretty serious and rough couple of months here at the tip of Africa, so we thought it would be fun to lighten things up a little, so to speak,” says Dillon Khan,Vice President Comedy Central, Nickelodeon and Paramount Creative Services.

The video used AI to show a fake version of President Cyril Ramaphosa
announcing a raft of outrageous tactics in a bid to solve the country’s energy
crisis. The proposed measures include demolishing Loftus Versfeld stadium and the Voortrekker Monument to build giant diesel generators.

“It was all in the spirit of good fun, but hopefully reminds people not to believe
everything they see on the internet,” adds Dillon.

“We had huge fun making it and are chuffed that we could make people smile
amid all the economic doom and gloom. After all, laughter is the best medicine, isn’t it? Even when the lights are off.”
