NWU honours psychology student, Onka, highlights that not only Women but Men also need to be as equally empowered

Today on our Wisdom Wednesday,   we talk to the former Editor of the student newspaper, The Album , Onka Coco Sheeq Itumeleng ,currently a radio personality on NWUFM 105.5

Onka is very opinionated young lady who strongly  believes that campaigns and programmes   for abuse  should be intensified and should not only focus on women but also on men. She urges organisations and government not to promote these campaigns on women’s month only but continuously so .

NWU honours psychology student, Onka, highlights that Abuse is a learnt behavior…“Women learn to submit to abuse, while men in most cases (what we hear) respond to passivity of women by continuing with violence…”

ONKA

Onka says, a woman is birthed with a gift of discernment and compassion that’s their strength. She believes that even though men are heads of families, they still need to be informed and educated about by being better husbands/fathers/brothers.

As a nation, we should start by an integrated seminar for both men and women. Women can be empowered in isolation, but it doesn’t help if she goes back to an abusive relationship. “Men need to be as equally empowered. In some relationships, men are also being abused by their partners…it takes two to tango…”

She says, women should stop perceiving themselves as victims.  She emphasised that the greatest potential for change, starts with you.

“. A woman is influential, respect your body and use your God given wisdom to rule. You don’t have to “think like a man, and act like a lady”….”

Her word of advice to women is …

Reign with peace and grace

Be informed with what’s happening around your world

Surround yourself with people that inspire you, it will help you to raise your own standard

Respect other women and yourself

Think out the box and capitalize on your talents to earn an income, passion over everything

Family is family regardless

Know your worth, don’t compromise your value
