Regarded as the country’s premier music awards and run and hosted by the Recording Industry of South Africa, this year’s SAMAs take place on Saturday, 4th June at the Durban International Convention Centre (Durban ICC) with the EThekwini Municipality as the hosting partner.
Says Refiloe Ramogase, Chairman of the SAMAs: “We are delighted with our new partnership with the very progressively minded Ethekwini Municipality. This marks a fresh chapter in South Africa’s premier music Music Award show! A chapter in which we shall build on the Annual South African Music Award’s solid, respected heritage and proud legacy with a renewed youthful vibrancy.”

Nominees for the 22nd Annual South African Music Awards will be made in April.

The awards have a long history of promoting local music and acknowledging the contribution made by music artists to grown the music and entertainment industry.
We salute our musicians and appreciate the role they play in impacting lives as well as showcasing South Africa’s diverse culture and rich history through music. EThekwini is proud to be partnering with the Recording Industry of South Africa for this year’s SAMAs.
We have worked hard to position eThekwini as a choice destination for local and international shows and conferences. Hosting the SAMAs is another feather in our cap in this regard.

We take the issue of developing our artists very seriously. Earlier this year a summit was held in the City providing a platform for all artists and relevant industry roleplayers to meet to discuss their visions for the creative industry in the City. From the robust discussion that ensued, a common vision for the industry emerged, which we can all collectively strive towards.
There is also the added benefit of global exposure when these artists tour intentionally as they become ambassadors for our City and take Durban to the world.
The creative industry, of which music plays a vital role, can be used to improve the lives of our people. The creative arts and entertainment industry has the potential, through well planned initiatives, to address skills development particularly for the youth.
One again, we are proud to be hosting the SAMAs. I welcome you again to our beautiful City. Durban is an amazing oasis of entertainment and I invite you to take the time to explore our City and its many attractions.
