The Department of Arts, Culture, Sports and Recreation in the Northwest announced that it will host the 5thinstallation of the Mahika Mahikeng festival in March 2023. The ultimate cultural music festival is making a return in the heart of the North West province, Mahikeng. Postponed from December 2022, the festival will take place on the 17th – 19th March 2023 and is set to see a hive of activities over the three days, with a line-up that promises a blissful weekend not to be missed.
This annual festival makes its return after a 2 year hiatus due to the Covid 19 pandemic. The aim of the festival is to encourage collaborative partnerships with the community and stimulate the local art economy. The event will be held at the Mmabatho Stadium Parking Lot Dome.
“The festival returns with the same objective, to promote cultural and heritage tourism as well as to celebrate the artists from the region with the rest of the nation. It is an essential source of arts and culture identity, as it plays an important role in promoting cultural diversity, social cohesion, reconciliation, peace and economic development within the province at large.” explains Chief Director: Department of Arts, Culture, Sports & Recreation, Mr Thabo Mabe
This sentiment is echoed by North West born and bred legendary artist and actor, Stoan Seate who said: “The Department of Arts and Culture has gone through great strides to ensure the upliftment of the local communities within the province. We encourage the Citizens of North West to be patriotic and continue to embrace platforms created by government that benefit the community.”
The first day of the festival will be focused on gospel, with the legendary Joyous Celebration headlining the show, supported by the exceptional Bucy Radebe, Manana Ramogae and Tumisang Seleke to name a few.The second day promises to be an incredible evening of soulful Jazz, featuring iconic headliners, Zonke and Ringo supported by Ayanda Jiya, Dee Afrique, AusTebza to name a few.
The Scorpion Kings will bring electrifying energy on the last day of the festival as the Amapiano duo Kabza Da Small and DJ Maphorisa are set to showcase South Africa’s Amapiano genre. The evening will also see performances from the likes of Mo Molemi, MagleraDoe Boy, Areece, DBN GOGO and other local artists.
“Attracting people from all over the country will have significant economic impact for the local communities, and it is a great opportunity to promote tourism into the province, and to Mahikeng specifically. It will create a benefit to the hospitality industry as there will be an influx of people into the province who will be coming to attend the festival.” concludes Mr Thabo Mabe.
