Halls created their unique ‘Breathing Spaces’ campaign two years ago which offered artists and creatives the opportunity to be part of a mentorship programme with maverick artist, Karabo Poppy. Halls Breathing Spaces also offered access and support to several artists within the art scene, as well as the opportunity to upskill their craft and in doing so, the campaign was a massive influence in shaping the artists’ economic prowess too.
This year, in order to elevate and empower that artist economy even further, we are launching Halls: Breathing Spaces 2.0 as the extension of the original campaign. Breathing Spaces 2.0 will ensure that the artists are presented with job opportunities, while simultaneously equipping them with skills that will generates income, under the mentorship of photographer, filmmaker, art director and co-founder of I See A Different You, Fhatuwani Mukheli.

“When I was an upcoming artist, I needed an effective mentor who displayed empathy at all points in our relationship,” explains Fhutuwani. “It was crucial for me to partner with Halls: Breathing Spaces 2.0, as I will offer the mentees sincere understanding, evaluation, and advice. Without this understanding, any sort of mentorship feedback and guidance may sound impractical, irrelevant and unrealistic to the young talent.”
Blackbrick is an exclusive collective of artists who have partnered with the properties to create art in the form of paintings and sculptures which gets to live in different hotels as part of their interior design. The Halls: Breathing Space 2.0 mentees will be using their talents to create works of art at the BlackBrick hotel in Sandton, which is due to open in Xxx (insert date).
“We are excited to be partnering with Halls to help artists get into various spaces. We want artists to have a more expansive view of their potential. And to us, working with these upcoming artists is all about letting them see their potential and then helping them find the path to get in those breathing spaces,” says Jonathan Liebmann, founder of BlackBrick.
Thembi Butelezi, Head of Equity and Marketing Strategy, Mondelez International adds, “It’s exciting to see the journey these artists are embarking on to grow and create more traction for their individual careers and their art, and we hope that the support from Halls as well as Blackbrick and Fhatuwani will enable them to soar even higher.”
The artists who have been selected to participate in Halls: Breathing Spaces 2.0 are Anathi Hadebe, Dustin August, Boemo Diale, Johnny Allison, Leigh Le Roux, Levi Pooe, Buhle Ramalepa and Thamsanqa Gwafa, who are all ecstatic about their inclusion.
“It’s still unbelievable! I feel honoured and excited about the whole experience. Having my art be exhibited at Blackbrick is like a stamp of approval or confirmation that I have something special when it comes to my art, and also that my art is versatile and good enough to be in an incredible hotel like that!” exclaims Buhle Ramalepa.
“Being showcased at Blackbrick Hotel is a significant accomplishment for an artist. Having my work displayed there gives me a sense of pride knowing that I can add to the beautiful surroundings and architecture of the building,” says Thamsanqa Gwafa.
