Joburg crowns its city champions as the search for South Africa’s next Red Bull BC One World Final representatives kicks off
B-Boy Barshie claimed victory at the Red Bull BC One Cypher Johannesburg on Sunday, securing his place in September’s Red Bull BC One South Africa National Final after winning the opening qualifier of the 2026 season.
Red Bull BC One is the world’s most prestigious one on one breaking competition, and the format that plays out at every stop is the same: no fixed playlist, no routines, just two dancers, one circle, and a panel of judges scoring technique, originality, creativity, musicality and performance. Johannesburg was the first test of the season. It will not be the last.
For Barshie, the win landed as validation of a long run in a scene that does not get many chances to prove itself. “You don’t really have a lot of competitions like this in South Africa, so this was really good,” he said after the battle. He had prepared despite a packed schedule, and the day left an impression beyond his own result: “I really enjoyed watching all the other guys.”
With the Joburg cypher behind him, the focus shifts straight to Cape Town. Asked what changes between now and the National Final, Barshie kept it simple: “I’m just going to keep training harder.”
B-Girl Baylie took the women’s title on the same day, the only B-Girl to compete at the Johannesburg cypher. As the only B-Girl in the field, Baylie battled B-Boys throughout the competition, embracing the challenge as preparation for September. “It felt necessary to do it,” she said. “The breaking scene is always changing, so I want to stay in it as much as I can.”
Going up against the men sharpened exactly what she needs for September, she said: “It teaches you a lot, it pushes my stamina, and my power. That helps a lot, it prepares me for what I have to get ready for and how I have to get ready.”
Ahead of the National Final, the work is as much mental as physical: “I’m definitely going to focus on my power, and also my mindset. I just want to focus on believing in myself, and then pushing, waking up early, getting to bed late. Just putting the hours in,” she concluded.
The Road Ahead
Johannesburg was the opening stop on a three city qualifying run. Red Bull BC One Cypher East London follows on Saturday, 25 July, with Red Bull BC One Cypher Cape Town closing out the qualifiers on Saturday, 1 August. City winners and wildcards then progress to the Red Bull BC One South Africa National Final, taking place in Cape Town on Sunday, 6 September 2026, with free tickets available to the public.
The stakes climb sharply from there. The winning B-Boy and B-Girl at the National Final will represent South Africa at the Red Bull BC One World Final in Toronto, Canada on Sunday, 29 November 2026, where the country’s best will go up against the sport’s global elite for the title of World Champion.
