Have You Heard? Proudly South African’s Local Fashion Police Competition Has Been Extended!

The deadline for entries in the Proudly South African Local Fashion Police competition, which aims to promote and drive support for Mzansi’s fashion creators, has been extended, Proudly South African has announced.

The competition was meant to close on Friday 7 October 2022, but will now end on Friday 21 October 2022. This extension will allow more fashion lovers to enter and showcase their love of local brands, while advocating for more people to procure from local designers.

Whether you love patterns or plain fabric, or enjoy high fashion or essential everyday wear, Local Fashion Police is for you. By entering you stand a chance of being one of four lucky winners to each walk away with R20 000 worth of local fashion, adding a pinch of taste to your existing collection.

Local Fashion Police is a campaign by Proudly South African aimed at promoting and celebrating the clothing, textiles, footwear, and leather industry – a significant job creator that boosts the local creative economy –- through an online competition. Members of the public are invited to post photos of themselves on social media wearing South African fashion while showing the label of origin in the picture and tagging the store and/or designer.

The competition’s judges are acclaimed local designers Gavin Rajah of Gavin Rajah Atelier, Sello Medupe of SCALO, Biji Gibbs of Biji La Maison de Couture, and Rubicon Clothing’s Hangwani Nengovhela who – fittingly with the current warm weather – brought the heat into fashion at a recent photoshoot at the Ledikana fashion and accessories store in Johannesburg. Proudly South African’s chief marketing officer, Happy MaKhumalo Ngidi, is excited about extending the competition and says, “One thing we know for sure is that clothes are not simply clothing items; they are confidence boosters. By extending the competition, we aim to highlight the role played by local buyers and inspire people to support local creators. We anticipate an additional collection of creativity, style, and variety from entrants within the extended period.”

“Since the launch of the competition, the interest has been phenomenal – South Africans have come out in their numbers to show our designers what they are made of! It’s been loads of fun!” concluded MaKhumalo Ngidi

So come on, South Africa, be part of this movement to boost our economy. Get your families, friends, neighbours, acquaintances, and colleagues to enter the competition, all in the interests of promoting local garment production and job creation! Will you be one of our winners? Are your fingers crossed?

Our style council (aka the judges) is looking for Mzansi-made originals with no restrictions on style, colour or design – as long as entrants are wearing 100% locally made items. So, whether it’s streetwear, workwear or urban wear, show off your favourite local designer’s creations.

The Local Fashion Police 2022 online competition will culminate in an awards ceremony and fashion show in mid-November, during which the four winners will get to show off the amazing clothing items they have won, showcasing the creative talent of our designer judges. During the event, Proudly SA will also celebrate its 21st anniversary, with a display of local music to complement the fashion on display.
