Garth Brown, the multi-talented soul, gospel and rock musician has through his music talent turned an almost tragic moment in his life into triumph.
After spending time in ICU in June 2021, at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, musician, Garth Brown kept himself spiritually in check when he hummed the popular biblical scripture: “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, you are the one, you’re my comfort and my help, which soon turned into a song, ‘No Evil’ to be released as a new single more than three years after the solemn prayer.
Today- more than three years later, the talented musician is ready to release “No Evil” as his debut single, marking the beginning of an inspiring new chapter in his musical journey. As a musician and vessel of love and light, Garth Brown uses the power of song to narrate some of his darkest, rock-bottom moments. This poignant track serves as the prelude to his forthcoming EP.
Brown refers to ‘No Evil’ as a prophecy that saved his life. Initially recorded as a freestyle video after a studio session for Shi Kargo’ssingle ‘About You’ in August 2020, (during lockdown) the song took on new significance a year later.
The musician with more than ten years in the industry, describes, ‘No Evil’ as a prophecy that kept him alive during his harrowing battle with COVID-19 while in ICU, June 2021. The lyrics and melody echo the strength and hope that sustained him through his fight, turning a time of suffering into an anthem of survival and renewal.
“This song literally saved my life and as I sang it silently to myself, I felt His strength returning to me. I attribute my recovery to him and the strong message contained in the words, “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, you are the one, you’re my comfort and my help…,” he says.
This year, Brown reveals that he has received multiple prophetic encounters and messages affirming that music is a significant part of his life purpose. Through these encounters, he has realised that sharing the music that helped him through his multiple ordeals was essential; and that keeping it to himself would deprive others of the same spiritual encounter.
Produced by the talented Shi Kargo, with whom Garth Brown has a rich history of musical collaborations, ‘No Evil,’ blends acid jazz and lounge/soulful house music. The marriage of Rhodes, synths, and drumline creates a buoyant instrumentation, complemented by Brown’s ethereal vocals and harmonies. On recording the single; “We had just wrapped a recording session, and as I was readying to pack up, I played those chords and the Holy Spirit took over Garth Brown, I recalled him saying: Let me freestyle something, as he closed his eyes and just began singing what is now known as ‘No Evil’, I’m so happy that I managed to capture that moment on video – unexpectedly, it was a great, unexplained studio experience. I’m glad it came out the way it is, and now we’re able to share the anointing we felt creating it” says Shi Kargo.
The synergy between Garth Brown and Shi Kargo is evident, showcasing a deep creative bond and a shared vision of using music as a force for good. “I wanted to share my journey and the light that guided me through my darkest times,” says Garth Brown. “‘No Evil’ is more than a song; it’s a beacon of hope and a reminder that even in our most trying moments, we can find strength and peace.” Garth Brown’s debut single is a powerful introduction to his upcoming EP, promising a collection of songs that delve into personal trials and triumphant recoveries. Each track will explore the depths of human emotion, offering listeners a raw and authentic experience that inspires and heals.
