Today is heritage day and what a better way to celebrate this day by embracing and showing respect towards each others culture and eating heritage food, food with rich history.

All these years I never new why biltong was considered as heritage food.I sat down with my grandmother who told me that bilton is actually african origin food. She explained that biltong is one of South Africa’s most popular and iconic snacks because indigenous peoples of Southern Africa, such as the Khoikhoi, preserved meat by slicing it into strips, curing it with salt, and hanging it up to dry.
After European settlers (Dutch, German, French) arrived in southern Africa in the early 17th century, they improved the curing process by using vinegar, saltpetre and spices including pepper, coriander and cloves. Wow,we have so much history we don’t know about, wouldn’t you agree?
